Both 再 (zài) and 又 (yòu) can mean “again” in Chinese, but they’re not the same. When should you use ? When should you use

✅ 再 (zài) – Again, but later

  • 明天我来。Míngtiān wǒ zài lái. 👉🏼 I’ll come again tomorrow.
  • 说一遍。Qǐng zài shuō yí biàn. 👉🏼 Please say it again.


又 (yòu) – Again, and it already happened

  • 迟到了。yòu chídào le. 👉🏼He was late again.
  • 你怎么来了?Nǐ zěnme yòu lái le? 👉🏼 Why did you come again?

💡  What’s the Big Difference?

📌 is for later. You’re talking about something that will happen again in the future.

📌  is for now or before. Something already happened or is happening again.

❌ 我明天又来。

Wǒ míngtiān yòu lái. (Wrong!)

我明天再来。

Wǒ míngtiān zài lái. (I’ll come again tomorrow.)


他再迟到了。

Tā zài chídào le. (Wrong!)

他又迟到了。

Tā yòu chídào le. (He was late again.)
